This week we worked on creating butterfly life cycle booklets.
This involved writing, cutting,  pasting, and coloring which the students
always enjoy.

Thanks to some adult helpers the work on the project went much smoother and quicker.

We recently visited the Colebrook Public Library.  Mrs. Santangilo read us some cute stories.  Some of the students submitted forms so they could get a library card. Those already with library cards got to pick out a book and bring it back to school to read and enjoy.

This past Monday was very busy, because Ms. Stowebridge's first grade class also had a butterfly ready to spread its wings and fly away.

On Monday Mrs. Coats' butterfly was also ready to be tagged and released!

Mr. Haley's butterfly decided to escape over the weekend and check out the kindergarten classroom.  It was captured and put into a netting in Mrs. Moren's room with a little food.  Mrs. Moren did some 'butterfly sitting' until Mr. Haley came in  on morning.  The he was able to tag and release the butterfly with his class!

Mrs. Moren's butterfly couldn't wait for the third grade class to return on Monday.  It had to be released over the weekend.

Butterfly tagging and release at the high school

Mrs. Hastings' second graders brought a newly hatched butterfly over to Mr. Hastings' class to tag and be released.

The Butterflies began to emerge!

It's a girl!  The butterflies began to emerge.  We learned to tell boys from girls and shared this information with other classes.  The recording of the tagged butterflies is required to indicate whether each butterfly is a male or female.

Second visit to Colebrook Academy

During the second visit the sophmore class discussed the earth's magnetic field and its connection to the Monarch Butterflies.

Mr. Hastings and Mrs. Richards are studying the chrysalises.

First visit with Sophmores at Colebrook Academy

First we got to see how Mr. Hastings and the high school students are viewing and recording the different stages in the development of  Monarch Butterflies from the caterpillars we had brought to the Academy science room.  Then the 'sophmore teachers' instructed the second graders in lessons regarding magnetic forces.

Students used magnetic forces to give this poor guy some hair or a mustache.

Visiting Colebrook Academy

Our second grade class visited Colebrook Academy to meet with sophmores in Mr. Hastings' classes.
